The boys made constructive use of their time by cleaning up hospital and churchyards in Corvallis and in Alsea. The idea gained front page publicity in the Portland papers and many others.

Arnold constructed a curriculum structure, dividing studies into two departments, Literary and Scientific. Each department contained specific corresponding schools.
