Photo shows the headwaters of the Sandy River on the western slope of Mt. Hood. Timber growth is slowly covering the scars of a forest fire which probably raged around 1890. Mt. Hood, 11,245 feet high, was named in 1792 in honor of Viscount Hood of the English peerage.
Another of Oregon's bridges of art and utility -- that over the Rogue River famed for its salmon and Steelhead fishing. Built in 1930 at a completed cost of $650,000 this bridge is on the southern stretch of the Oregon Coast Highway. Photographs made for the Oregon State Highway Commission by Gifford.
