Originally named Marian Hall, this dormitory was built by Sacred Heart Hospital to house nursing students. It was acquired by Northwest Christian University (NCU) in 1971 and in 1987 the University of Oregon bought the building from NCU. At the request of students, Marian Hall was renamed in 1989 after World War II veteran Harold "Pat" Riley, Jr., who died in France in 1944. 4 p. Cie Goulet's 1989 exhibition list., Cie Goulet is well known for her energetic paintings of the Oregon landscape. Her dramatic color and light is further enhanced by the use of black as a base color (monotypes on black paper). Cie Goulet attended San Francisco Art Institute, Parsons School of Design and graduated from the University of Oregon in 1965, where she studied under the late Jack Wilkinson. In the last twenty years the artist has exhibited in various areas of the U.S. including: Tamasulo Gallery, Cranford, NJ; Louis Meisel Gallery, NY; Artists Space, NY as well as one person exhibitions at Lynn McAllister Gallery, Seattle, WA; Salishan Lodge, Gen Eden, OR; River Run Gallery, Ketchum, ID and the Laura Russo Gallery, Portland, OR. Cie Goulet exhibited her work in the exhibition "First Impressions: Northwest Monotypes" at the Seattle Art Museum, WA which then traveled to the Marylhurst College, Art Gym Gallery. 3 p. Judith Poxson Fawkes' 1989 exhibition list., Judith Poxson Fawkes, a resident of Portland, Oregon, is a graduate of Cranbrook Academy of Art. She taught weaving at four institutions of higher education, most recently at Lewis and Clark College, Portland. Her fifty-six commissions hang in such diverse locations as a Federal courthouse, hospitals, university and school buildings, corporations and businesses, a Royal Caribbean Cruise ship, residences in Saudi Arabia and Paris, and in a jail lobby. Sixty-three tapestries are in public collections. She is a recipient of a WESTAF/NEA Regional Fellowship for Visual Artists, an Individual Artists' Fellowship from the Oregon Art Commission and a Crafts Fellowship from the National Endowment of the Arts. She has written a book entitled "Weaving a Chronicle," described as a visual and written catalog by a working tapestry weaver. Forty-six tapestries, pictured in color, are accompanied by adjacent text describing the reasons for each work's creation. Stories of the tapestries revisit commissions and exhibitions. Each tapestry represents seminal ideas in one of six series. The tapestries contribute to the chronicle of how ideas are conceived and executed-- adding to the history of American art and craft, and to the definition of contemporary tapestry. The frailty of life on this planet and the need to recognize the interconnectedness of all species are common threads that weave through Bartow's work. His Yurok Indian heritage and his experiences in Vietnam are the source of these feelings and nurture his imagery. Crow/raven and a pantheon of other animals, including man, figure prominently in his work. He reanimates the ancient myths of Northwest peoples into his visual language. Once the symbol of rebirth and the spirit of all life, crow is a ghost-like figure in this monotype who knows "he" is no longer central to our lives. (OAC documentation, 1990). A Vietnam veteran and a Yurok tribal member, he addresses grief and fear in his work as means to dismantling them. His work is represented by Froelick Gallery and Stonington Gallery.
