James B. Stephens with his wife and seven children crossed the plains from Illinois in 1844 and arrived at Oregon City the day before Christmas. The following year he settled on the banks of the Willamette where east Portland is now located. Tradition says that he purchased a section of this land for $150.00. He built the residence which you see in this picture in 1867. Mr. Stephens died in 1889 at age of 82. The residence was left to his daughter Mrs. Rosette Jones.
