The building had been remodeled and expanded in 1876 in order to accommodate a year-round preparatory department and an additional faculty member. Much of the lumber for the addition was donated by a member of the board of trustees, R. W. Brock of Corvallis.

Earl Price stands at left. Price worked for Oregon State for forty-three years and led the School of Agriculture from 1950 to 1965. Jess Hanson was a renowned local poultry breeder from about 1911-1966.
The College Inn was constructed as a private residence hall in 1967 by the College Inns of America. OSU acquired the property in 1975. After a major renovation in 2006, it became The Gem, named for an early OSU student publication. It is located on Kings Blvd. just north of Monroe Avenue.
