Famous Rock - Pulpit Rock, on E. 12th street back of The Dalles High School, appears much the same today as it did in the 1890's when this photo was taken by B.A. Gifford, widely known pioneer cameraman. Another traditional Easter sunrise service will be held at dawn Sunday at the rock, which now stands in the middle of 12th street. Joseph Luxillo, an Indian who was baptized at the old Methodist mission at 12th and Washington streets about 1840, posed for this picture. He thereby illustrated how the Rev. Daniel Lee, one of the founders of The Dalles mission, sat in a seat he had chiseled out on the top of the rock and preached in native Indian tongue. Mr. Lee also would mount the rock and call Indians to service with a long tin horn.
