Roy A. Young (right) became assistant professor of Plant Pathology in 1948. Young was head of the Botany and Plant Pathology department from 1958-1966. Young served for a short term as acting president from 1969-1970. He also served as Vice President of Research and Graduate Studies through 1977.

Ralph S. Besse was a farm management Extension specialist from 1922-1932, then served as Assistant Director of the Agricultural Experiment Station from 1932-1949. From 1949-1953, Besse was Associate Director of the Experiment Station.
Coming to OSU in 1961, Harold J. Evans held professorships in plant physiology and biochemistry until his retirement in 1988. Specializing in the study of nitrogen fixation, Evans also served as Director of the Laboratory for Nitrogen Fixation Research. In 1965 he was co-winner of the Hoblitzelle National Award for discovering role of cobalt in nitrogen fixation by leguminous plants.
