Marcus J. Borg (1942-2015) was a professor in the OSU Philosophy Department from 1979 to 2007, and was recognized internationally as a leading scholar on Jesus as a historical figure.
Russell O. Sinnhuber was a founder in 1965 of a successful research program at OSU and retired as emeritus professor of Food Science and Technology in 1981. Professor Sinnhuber was among one of the first scientists anywhere to recognize the potential of the rainbow trout as a sensitive, low-cost non-mammalian model for cancer research.
Menken earned First Team All-American status in 1981 and played on the Olympic gold medal winning 1984 United States women’s basketball team. She played for OSU from 1979 to 1981 and set several school records, some of which still stand.

Erwin Suess was an Oceanographer for Oregon State University for 12 years before moving to Germany for research. In 1985, Suess became one of the first scientists to discover methane hydrate deposits along the Oregon Coast. Suess received a lifetime achievement award July 2011.

Mercedes Bates graduated in 1936 with a degree in Food and Nutrition. In 1967, Bates was appointed the Vice President of the General Mills Betty Crocker Division, becoming the first female corporate officer of General Mills. Bates created the Mercedes A. Bates Family Study Center in 1992, the first center to study entire lifespans of families. Bates has received the Distinguished Service Award and Distinguished Alumni Award.
