Deciduous trees line both shores, and the hills in the background are fairly well forested, with conifers primarily in evidence. Buildings are visible in the middle ground on the low hills, especially to the right. A slight haze hangs over the valley in the distance but in the foreground the shadows of a sunny day are strong.

There is one locomotive and about 10 cars on the train. In the foreground is a pond, mostly encircled by trees except to the left, where ruts of a dirt road can be seen. The train travels on an embankment. Behind it can be seen the river, with low, sparsely-treed hills rising beyond. There are puffy clouds in the sky.
