Description: A Native American man, identified as Dr. Whirl-wind (Charley Whirlwind, Sr.) of the Cayuse Tribe, is mounted on a horse. The man is wearing buckskin pants and shirt and moccasins. The shirt is decorated with feathers and beadwork on the front and sleeves. He is wearing a headdress with a full crown of feathers and strips of fur hanging down around his shoulders. He has a large beaded choker. The horse is solid brown in color and has a saddle, saddle blanket and bridle. On the ground in front of the horse is a dog with long, fluffy white hair. The man, horse, and dog are on a slope on the side of a mountain. Around them are some other slopes and some stands of pine trees. The top of the mountain is in the background.

Description: A scene that has been identified as looking east from Thorn Hollow on the Umatilla Indian Reservation. Two tipis stand on a plain scattered with bare shrubs. In the background of the picture is a line of evergreens and bare-branched trees that runs along a stretch of railroad tracks. Telegraph poles are visible along the line of the tracks. Beyond them, smooth treeless hills rise up and are snow-covered in the distance. In the center of the photo, what looks like a meandering seasonal stream feeds into a swamp or pond. The tipis are set away from the pond a few yards. The tipi on the left is smaller and made of canvas; the tipi on the right is made of tule mats. Near the tipi on the right is a stack of firewood and a wagon. A tall bare pole stands some feet to the right of the wagon. Description: An outside photograph of two Native American men standing in a campsite. Both men are wrapped in what have been identified as Pendleton blankets. There are three tipis in the campsite. The tipi farthest back shows a darkened canvas. The middle tipi has smoke coming out of it; it is composed from layered tuli mats and canvas. There are rough-hewn poles lying on the outside of both tipis, as well as internal frame poles that extrude from the top. The third tipi -- on the photograph's right side -- is made entirely of canvas and shows no external poles. There is an opening in the top for smoke to escape; the top has been noticeably darkened from the smoke. Behind the three tipis lies a dark, unidentified, man-made structure; it is surrounded by brush and appears to have a ladder either leaning against it or sticking through an opening. Both men are wearing hats; one man appears to be walking away from the tipis while the other is leaning against what has been identified as an oar. Behind the man with the oar is a tipi opening; there is a tule mat covering the doorway and miscellaneous articles lying on the ground. There are two dogs in the campsite. In the surrounding area are cottonwood trees and pine trees. The cottonwood trees are leafless and there may be patches of snow on the ground. All around the campsite are shrubs, and a gently rising hillside can be seen in the background.
