The alkali lakes in the interior part of the state are rich in nitrate, potash, and soda. Extensive development of these resources now is in progress. The men shown in this picture are taking samples for chemical analysis. Other minerals known to be present in Oregon in commercial quantities are limestone, marble, building stone, granite, basalt, coal, clay, sand, and gravel.
The alkaline waters of the Eastern Oregon lakes are places in these vats and allowed to evaporate in the sun. The residue then is collected and the nitrate is extracted. This picture was taken on Sucker Creek in Malheur County. The American Nitrate Company is building up an important industry here.
