Description: A black-and-white photograph with the number 8601 written in white ink on the lower left corner. On the back of the photo is written in pencil "The Vista House at Crown Point on the Columbia River Highway near Portland, Oregon". The curves of the two-lane highway lead up to the scenic overlook of Vista House, an octagonal stone building with a copper dome roof, constructed between 1916 and 1918 as a rest stop and a memorial to early pioneers. The view is up the Columbia River to the east during autumn or winter. We see partly-forested hills and mountains, the river and its banks, and far away snow on some mountains. In the foreground of the photo are bare-branched trees, evergreens, and telephone poles lining the road. A white wooden fence follows along part of the roadway. There seems to be some kind of building along the road leading up to Vista House, obscured behind the big evergreen in the foreground. Towards the right corner of the photo it looks as though an automobile is parked in the grass.

Description: A black-and-white photograph of the Columbia River Gorge taken from the site of the Chanticleer Inn, which was built in 1912 and burned in 1930. It is now the Portland Women's Forum State Scenic Viewpoint. The view is east towards Rooster Rock and up the river. Part of the Columbia River Highway can be seen below.

The foot of Queenstown rests on the deep blue water of Wakatipu, which has a serpentine lengths of 52 miles and amid majestic mountains. Facing the town are the Remarkable, huge sierras sculptured nobly by gigantic agents of Nature, and there are other rugged ridges and graceful peaks that help to make the charm of this peaceful lake land. This was a battleground of titanic glaciers long ages ago, but the monsters have lost much of their might, and have retreated to distant heights."

Description: Image Description from historic lecture booklet: "Of the three great classes referred to above, the most widely known is the alpine type, which derives its name from the mountains of central Europe, where it was first studied. Alpine glaciers occur about high peak and on the summits and flanks of mountain ranges in many parts of the world, but reach their most perfect development in temperate regions. The Himalayas, the Alps, the mountains of Scandinavia, the Southern Alps of New Zealand, the Cordilleras, etc., furnish well-known examples. Glaciers of this type originate as a rule in amphitheaters and cirques, partially surrounded by lofty peaks and overshadowing precipices, and flow through rugged valleys leading from them as winding ice rivers which carry the excess of snow falling on the mountains into the lower regions, where a higher mean annual temperature causes it to melt. They are essentially streams of ice, formed usually by the union of many branches, and end abruptly when the drainage changes from a solid to a liquid form."

Description: Image Description from historic lecture booklet: "This is an amazingly beautiful lake; more than a thousand feet above sea level, about fifty miles long and exceedingly deep. Azure blue, cobalt blue and the blue of coral seas are seen in its waters; and on the highest summits of the practically treeless ranges that wall it in. snow exists at all times of the year. Geologists say that Waktipu occupies the bed of a glacier, but according to Maori mythology it was dug with a spade by Chief Rakahaitu. Gooding says "If this be true, Rakaihaitu was the greatest navvy New Zealand has ever produced and had he lived today he would have been the very man to dig the Panama Canal."
