Famous city of Speyer, one of the oldest cities of Germany, the capital of Bavaria. The Palatinate is located on the left side of the River Rhine, with a population of 24,000; it has a beautiful cathedral, the second largest church of Germany--Gothic and Romanesque style. Notice the round arches. Here are the tombs of the German emperors, especially the emperors of armies; they are buried in these catacomb-like crypts. In 1689 and 1794 Speyer was destroyed by French invasions. It became French in 1801, and after the victory over Napoleon it became Bavarian in 1815.
Now we see first the captial of Bavaria, Munich, or Muenchen. It is located on the River Isar. The colors of the flag of this country are blue and white. Besides beer, Munich is known for some other things, especially art. Munich, famous for the great art that has been created all during the centuries, is one of the art centers of Germany, and on the same level with Berlin and Dresden. It has a famous university, a Polytechnic Institute with university rank, an Academy of Fine Arts, an Academy of Natural Sciences, a famous German Academy, an Academy for Dramatic Art, for the education of actors and actresses, and a famous institute for Psychopathology, many important museums, and among them the Bavarian National Museum. This National Museum contains historical monuments and documents taken from all different branches and fields of the history of civilization, from olden times up to the present. There are two famous art galleries--the old and new Pinakotheca. The Old Pinakotheca contains masters especially of the 19th and 20th centuries. Furthermore, there is the Glyptothek, containing antique art, especially sculpture of the Greek and Roman times. Also, there is the Schack Gallery, containing German art of the 19th century especially. There is a large, wonderful State Library connected with the University Library, other galleries and the famous Alpine Museum. The name Muenchen is derived from the German word for "monk"--Moench. It has originally been a monk settlement, so it is called Muenchen. The periods which are famous for their art creations were under King Ludwig I, King Max II, and Ludwig II. Here is one of the newest architectural buildings in the city, finished a couple of years ago, the famous German Museum containing all branches of technique and natural sciences, and representing the most famous institute of this kind. At no other place in the world is a similar museum to be found. Weeks and months may be spent studying these different departments of the German Museum in Munich.
On the first slide was shown a view of "Our Lady's Church" with the City Hall in the neighborhood. Here is the front view of "Our Lady's Church", a medieval structure in the style that is usually called Gothic. There are a number of architectural styles in the development of Western art and civilization. First, there is the Romanesque; second, the Gothic, then the Renaissance and finally the Baroque. This Gothic is the second of the great styles of the Occident; these are not confined to different nations, but are of inter-European character. Within the Gothic is distinguished the Early, High, and Late Gothic. This structure is wonderful example of High Gothic, especially the towers.
This Church is one of the best examples of the Baroque style in architecture, which is the next great style after the Renaissance Period. On the right side of the picture, beside St. Cajetan's Church, is a big hall representing the so-called "Feldherrnhalle", which was erected to honor military leaders, the generals.
This is one of the famous museums of Munich erected by King Max, under his rule, and forming the end of a long beautiful street, so that upon entering the street, one may see always in front this wonderful structure closing the view.
