This image is called a colortone print. Colortone prints are made by applying dying chemicals during or after processing to change the color base from silver.

This image of Houts' Ferry was taken in the 1920's. If you look closely at the print and compare it to other black and white prints, you can see the painting-like softness that makes the colortone print (P95:172b) so visually interesting.
