"Sampo" is a mysterious object often referred to in the mythological songs of the Finnish. According to the artist, the sampo is forged by the creator-smith Ilmarinen for Louhi, the hag-goddess of the underwold, to be used to harvest crops. This is Imonen's interpretation of that mythological machine. The mammoth cedar logs in the sculpture were salvaged from a forest fire near Roseburg. The steel used is also recycled in that it was purchased as a "second," --purchased but never used by the original buyer.
