Smith, the Ferry Operator.""The Annabelle S., used to replace the Rogue (nicknamed ""The Chopping Bowl"") was built in 1938 by C.T. ""Charley"" Smith. She ran until ferry service was discontinued at The Dalles in 1953. The 15-car, 62-ton ferry was equipped with an Atlas Diesel engine at the center and propeller at both ends with throw off clutches. Later, a Washington Diesel engine was added and still later, two Cummins Diesel engines, one for each propeller. She was bought by Wasco County in 1950 and run by that government. When service was discontinued in 1953, Esson Smith,son of Charley, purchased the boat.""
