This document was acquired after the award date and covers periods subsequent to the project., Judith Poxson Fawkes, a resident of Portland, Oregon, is a graduate of Cranbrook Academy of Art. She taught weaving at four institutions of higher education, most recently at Lewis and Clark College, Portland. Her fifty-six commissions hang in such diverse locations as a Federal courthouse, hospitals, university and school buildings, corporations and businesses, a Royal Caribbean Cruise ship, residences in Saudi Arabia and Paris, and in a jail lobby. Sixty-three tapestries are in public collections. She is a recipient of a WESTAF/NEA Regional Fellowship for Visual Artists, an Individual Artists' Fellowship from the Oregon Art Commission and a Crafts Fellowship from the National Endowment of the Arts. She has written a book entitled "Weaving a Chronicle," described as a visual and written catalog by a working tapestry weaver. Forty-six tapestries, pictured in color, are accompanied by adjacent text describing the reasons for each work's creation. Stories of the tapestries revisit commissions and exhibitions. Each tapestry represents seminal ideas in one of six series. The tapestries contribute to the chronicle of how ideas are conceived and executed-- adding to the history of American art and craft, and to the definition of contemporary tapestry. 4p. 1989 Tom Fawkes exhibition list. This document was acquired after the award date and covers periods subsequent to the project., A well-known Portland artist, Tom Fawkes, renders beautifully detailed photorealist landscape paintings and constructions in acrylic., watercolor and pastel. Through the use of Trompe L'Oeil painted shadows and constructed elements, Fawkes is able to translate the light, space and atmosphere of an environment in a way that is immediate and involving. Fawkes shows his work regularly in Seattle and Portland as well as numerous invitational exhibitions nationally. Public collections include: Safeco Corp., Seattle, Kaiser Foundation, Portland, Western Bank Corporation, Los Angeles, Seattle Art Museum, Portland Art Museum and the Phillip Morris Collection at Oregon Freeze Dry, Albany, Oregon. Tom Fawke's most recent work will reflect his continuing fascination with the Italian landscape and gardens. This interest was fostered after receiving the Rockefeller Foundation Grant in 1987 in which Fawkes was artist-in-residence at the Foundation Center in Bellagio, Italy.
