Description: "Sampo" is a mysterious object often referred to in the mythological songs of the Finnish. According to the artist, the sampo is forged by the creator-smith Ilmarinen for Louhi, the hag-goddess of the underwold, to be used to harvest crops. This is Imonen's interpretation of that mythological machine. The mammoth cedar logs in the sculpture were salvaged from a forest fire near Roseburg. The steel used is also recycled in that it was purchased as a "second," --purchased but never used by the original buyer. (from OAC materials), The Oregon Arts Commission has ten Regional Arts Councils that provide delivery of art services and information. The Council for this location is: Mid-Valley Arts.
