A black-and-white photographic postcard. The printed caption at upper right reads "The Needles, Cape Horn on the Columbia River". The view is of a rock formation known as The Needles, with a waterfall flowing from the top of a cliff and into the Columbia. At the base of the cliff at the edge of the water are natural stone columns. Some trees are at the top of the cliff and also on the far shore of the river.

20 p. An offprint of the journal Contracting, this pamphlet contains four reprints of articles and photographs previously published in the summer of 1916. Three articles are reprinted from Contracting, and the fourth, by Henry Bowlby, is reprinted from American Forestry. The articles and black and white photographs describe in brief the impetus for and history of the building of the Columbia River Highway and show the scenic beauties to be viewed from the road. There seems be be some advertisement for Warrenite, a road surface placed over macadam roads, which was used on the Highway. Both general description and more specific information about contracts, engineering, and construction history are contained in the articles.

In the foreground a man wearing a gray hat, red shirt, green-gold overalls, and black boots kneels at the top of a cliff on a formation identified as St. Peter's Dome. Below him is a steep but forested slope to the Columbia River below. At the bottom of the slope but further along the river is a segment of what appears to be a road or railroad right-of-way. Behind the man is a small waterfall. Beyond him is a view along the river, with Castle Rock half-obscured on the opposite shore, and mountains rising in the distance.

Description
Article by Randall R. Howard. The author describes the construction of the Columbia River Highway, and takes us on an automobile journey along the Highway from Portland, Oregon to The Dalles and Celilo Falls. Accompanying photographs are of a stretch of highway on the Washington side of the Columbia River, built by Sam Hill of Maryhill; a bridge above the stream from Latourelle Falls; a tunnel through the rock at Oneonta Gorge; and a view of Celilo Falls.

They all have long poles that they are thrusting into the water. They all wear hats, several of which are tall and slightly pointed, with wide brims. They wear pants or overalls, with long-sleeved shirts. The man on the far right wears what appears to be a denim jacket. The center and left foreground of the image is the water of the falls. In the background can be seen the shore, with foothills. On the far right center of the image is a wooden structure or scaffolding.

An elevated view of what is probably Multnomah Falls. A train, with an open-air passenger car and another covered passenger car, is in the foreground of the image. Automobiles from the 1920s or 1930s are in the middle of a road in front of a large brick building. People are walking along or standing in groups in the road and are also sitting in the open-air train car. Situated behind the building is a large tree-covered cliff with a long waterfall dropping from the top of the cliff.

On the morning of March 10, 1957, the massive steel and concrete gates of The Dalles Dam closed and choked back the downstream surge of the Columbia River. Six hours later and eight miles upstream, Wy-am (Celilo Falls), the age-old Indian salmon fishery was under water.
