Description: A black and white view of the toll bridge built across the Columbia River to link Hood River, Oregon, with the vicinity of Bingen, Washington. Built in the 1920s. This view is looking south towards Hood River and shows Mt. Hood, Hood River, and the Hood River Valley in the distance. Deciduous trees line both shores, and the hills in the background are fairly well forested, with conifers primarily in evidence. Buildings are visible in the middle ground on the low hills, especially to the right. A slight haze hangs over the valley in the distance but in the foreground the shadows of a sunny day are strong.

The author describes the construction of the Columbia River Highway, and takes us on an automobile journey along the Highway from Portland, Oregon to The Dalles and Celilo Falls. Accompanying photographs are of a stretch of highway on the Washington side of the Columbia River, built by Sam Hill of Maryhill; a bridge above the stream from Latourelle Falls; a tunnel through the rock at Oneonta Gorge; and a view of Celilo Falls.

Description: Black and white photograph of the Bridge of the Gods over the Columbia River. Fir trees are visible on the left bank and shrubs and grass are visible on the right bank. Some utility poles are visible on the right hand side of the image. Completed in 1926, the Bridge of the Gods is the third oldest bridge on the Columbia River. It plays a major role in the Pacific Crest Trail by linking Oregon and Washington states. Work began in 1920; it took six years to build. The bridge was privately owned until 1961, when it was purchased by the Port of Cascade Locks. The Pacific Crest Trail crosses the bridge, which is 1,858 feet long and 135 feet above the water. The name of the bridge comes from Indian legends. The man-made bridge was named after the natural bridge, probably a causeway or dam.

A group of people are lounging on it near two parked convertible automobiles. Some of the men wear caps, and one wears a straw boater. One man is leaning over the bridge facing the camera, consulting a map or guide which hangs down over the parapet on which two other men are sitting. The spoked tires of the cars can be seen through the arches. Beyond this bridge are the two cataracts of Multnomah Falls. There are more people on the stone-built Benson Bridge, which arches gracefully over the lower falls. There are trees on top of the cliff from which the water is falling, and more leafy trees and bushes framing the view .

The leafy branches of a tree form a frame of the view to the left of the photo. Beyond, the white blur of the waterfall rushes down the cliff and continues as a creek under the arched stone bridge in the foreground. About eight women and men, and two boys, stand along the bridge gazing at the waterfall. The men and women all wear hats, and the men wear suits. The women wear ankle-length dresses. Off to the side of the waterfall stand two men, a woman, and a child, similarly garbed and also looking towards the water. All three adults have walking sticks, and some of the people on the bridge also have them. The Yakima word "wahkeena" means "most beautiful".

The waterfall tumbles down from a cleft in the cliffs and descends in tiers, at last running under an arched stone bridge to form a small stream that runs along gravelly banks lined with leafy plants and trees. On top of the cliffs are evergreens.

The 542-foot length of the upper cataract is shown as it falls into a pool. Part of the 69-foot long lower cataract that emerges from the pool can be seen, crossed by Benson Bridge. This stone bridge was built in 1914 by Italian stone masons. The view of the falls and their cliff is framed by leafy trees and bushes. Bushes and other plants are on the sides of the cliffs, and more trees, including evergreens, surround the area at the top.
