Blea Tarn is a tiny lake jewel set high in the rugged hills to the southwest of Thirlmere Lake. This was the haunt of Wordsworth’s “Solitary”, chief figure in his poem, “The Excursion.” The picture is of 'Solitary’s' cottage, of which Wordsworth said: 'It seemed the house of poverty and toil.'

Description
In May, 1845, James Terwilliger with his wife and four children started from Illinois across the plains for Oregon. Mrs. Terwilliger died only a few days after they reached The Dalles. The remainder of the family pushed on to the present site of Portland where in November 1845, Mr. Terwilliger built this first house - a log cabin - where the infant city of Portland began its life two years later.

Description
Dr. McLoughlin, while connected with the Hudson Bay Co, had selected a place near Willamette Falls as the natural location for a future city. When he severed his relationship with that company he established himself at this place and in 1846 built this home on the east side of the present Main Street of Oregon City, opposite the Oregon City Woolen Mills. Several years ago people wishing to honor the memory of Dr. McLoughlin formed an association, purchased this house, and moved it to a location which they named McLoughlin Park just north of Seventh Street on the bluff in Oregon City. This old home of the benevelent pioneer fur trader has been repaired and renovated and now stands as a memorial to Dr. McLoughlin - kindly autocrat of the early Northwest, friend of Oregon and founder of Oregon City.

"Wordsworth lived in this house from 1813 to his death in 1850. The house is but little changed since the poet lived there. The terrace at the top of the step was a favorite spot of Wordsworth, particularly in the later years of his life. At this home the poet produced some of his most characteristic poetry - short pieces such as 'The Clouds' and 'The Mountain Echo.' From here he made many excursions to find the 'secluded temples of beauty', as he called them, following the ravines of Rydal Head and climbing the great, bleak crags - 'fit home for wild red deer."
