A pioneer in Oregon oceanography, Wayne Burt was the first director of what is now OSU's Hatfield Marine Science Center in Newport. He is recognized as the founder of OSU's oceanography program.
Sea Grant researcher Wilbur Breese is checking the growth rate of cultured oyster spat. He set up a pilot oyster hatchery at Oregon State University's Marine Science Center in 1965. His investigations succeeded in unlocking mysteries of oyster reproduction and paved the way for establishment of commercial oyster seed hatcheries.
Dock is found near the Yaquina Oyster Laboratory. Photo was used in "A progress report of investigations fo the native oyster in Yaquina Bay, Oregon" by R. E. Dimick and Jay Long, written in 1939 (Figure 10)
The Hatfield Marine Science Center Library was named as a memorial to Marilyn Potts Guin who served as the Marine Science Center's first Librarian from September 1976 until her death in December 1989. The Library was dedicated on July 4th, 1990.
