Title:"At Yokaichi" from the series:"53 Stations of the Takaido". This is Plate No. 44 at Yokkaichi- San Cho kawa. These are a set of 55 (including prints of starting off point at Yedo and arriving at Kyoto). The series was completed in Jan. 1834. A high wind is blowing from right across the marsh. To left, a peasant, cloaked, on a trestle bridge; another races along the causeway to catch his hat which has blown off. In center, a willow tree bending to the wind; left, roofs of cottages, and masts of boats. The bow of a punt in the foreground.
Bodice of ivory silk overlaid with fine silk tulle; wide, scoop neckline extends off shoulders; short puffy sleeves; deep pointed waistline at center-back and center-front; neckline and sleeves trimmed in rows of ruffles of white box pleated satin and tulle; lace-up closure at center-back; panel of back neckline wraps over to close; boning within; piped seams; lined in cambric.
Dress ensemble of gold silk brocade in a floral lattice pattern with muslin lining; empire length bodice has bateau neckline; upper portion of long sleeves are pleated and fitted; shirring above banded cuffs; center-front pleats radiate to yoke-shoulder; hook and eye fasteners at back; skirt is floor length with all around unpressed pleats.
Dress of ecru silk taffeta wide neckline and short bouffant sleeves; neckline is trimmed in pointed scallops of self-taffeta that fall over the shoulders; back closing of button covered hooks and eyes; band at waist; skirt is pleated at front and cartridge pleated at center-back; 2 padded bands at lower skirt trimmed with applied pointed scallops about 16" above hem of full-length skirt; all hand-made.
Title:" Full Length Portrait of a Young Man". Signed by: Yoshitoshi (1837-1892). Date: about 1975. Publisher's Seal: Yamajin. The principle underlying men's dress is the same as that of the women. The colors are generally low in tone, and decoration- if any- are limited. He is wearing a man's "hakama" (loose trousers). The flowers in his hands might suggest that he is on his way to decorate them on the graves of his ancestors. (Significance of paying respect of the dead.)
