2. Horizons

- This painting presents a nude human figure with longish black hair in profile. The figure stands against a backdrop of three bands of color: white at the top, light blue in the middle, and dark blue at the bottom., Michele Russo; Horizon; oil on canvas; 69 x 60.5 inches; 1991, Michele Russo was born in Waterbury, Connecticut in 1909. In 1930, he enrolled at Yale University and received a B.F.A. degree in painting in 1934. During the depression years he was employed at a muralist through a Works Progress Administration project and in this capacity executed murals in several Connecticut schools. In 1937, Russo left Connecticut to accept a fellowship to study with Boardman Robinson and George Biddle at the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado for one year. During the next ten years he was a social activist and worked for the Federal Education project in Connecticut. In the fall of 1947, Russo moved to Portland and was hired by the Museum Art School the following year to teach painting and art history, remaining on the staff until he retired in 1974. During his tenure at the Museum Art School he became known as Portland's most articulate voice of artists' political, social and artistic rights. In the 1950's, along with friends, he started a co-op op professional artists called Artists Equity. In recent years Russo has been active in various organizations to make art a more visible part of the cultural life in the Northwest; he was one of the original founders of the Portland Center for the Visual Arts. In 1975, he was Chairman of the Oregon Committee for Art in Public Places. In 1977, he was appointed to the Metropolitan Arts Commission; the first artists so honored. JEANNE FINGERHUT Jeanne Fingerhut was born in New York City, received her B.A. from Barnard College and her M.A. from the University of Paris - Sorbonne where she studied as a Fulbright Scholar. Although she painted and drew from early childhood, she did not pursue the study of art. Instead she became a teacher of foreign language specializing in phonetics and academic research. Life's events, however, led her into many artistic professions...textile design, illustration, hand-painted fashion...reminding her that painting and drawing were her greatest source of pleasure and expression. And so, while raising three sons and working in the fields of art, music and language, she painted consistently and showed her work in New York during the 1970's. In 1983 she relocated to the Pacific Northwest to devote full energies to art. Her work has expanded to include all varieties of mixed media, cut-out collage paintings and, most recently, hand colored etchings which reveal her interest in strong composition, juxtaposed pattern and design craftsmanship. Her art is included in private, corporate and public collections in the United States and abroad. Ms. Fingerhut died in 2002. Tom Fawke's most recent work will reflect his continuing fascination with the Italian landscape and gardens. A blue sky with white clouds hovers above the water in the background., Cie Goulet; Moon Boat II; 243; monotype; 22x30 inches; ohsu movable, Cie Goulet is well known for her energetic paintings of the Oregon landscape. Her dramatic color and light is further enhanced by the use of black as a base color (monotypes on black paper). Cie Goulet attended San Francisco Art Institute, Parsons School of Design and graduated from the University of Oregon in 1965, where she studied under the late Jack Wilkinson. In the last twenty years the artist has exhibited in various areas of the U.S. including: Tamasulo Gallery, Cranford, NJ; Louis Meisel Gallery, NY; Artists Space, NY as well as one person exhibitions at Lynn McAllister Gallery, Seattle, WA; Salishan Lodge, Gen Eden, OR; River Run Gallery, Ketchum, ID and the Laura Russo Gallery, Portland, OR. 8. Palm Land
- Description
- An abstract, mixed media painting rendered primarily in pastel blues, pinks, and yellows. Dark blue and red accent the piece., Frederick Heidel; Palm Land; 1990; mixed media; 30x30 inches; ohsu movable, Former chairman of the art & architecture department and professor of art at Portland State University for over 25 years, Frederick Heidel is well known and respected for his work in glass and acrylic paintings. Throughout his career, Heidel has exhibited widely including major shows at the San Francisco Museum of Art, Portland Art Museum, University of Oregon Art Museum, Smith/Anderson Gallery, Palo Alto, CA and Glasgalene Kuhler, Amsterdam, Holland. The artist has also been awarded numerous commissions and is included in many public and private collections. A painter, Heidel began working in glass in 1967 after receiving a Chapelbrook Foundation Grant to work in the glass factories in Holland. Since that time, the artist has traveled to the studios of Glassobjekte Van Tetterode to execute glass sculpture from drawings he has prepared in his Portland studio. The exploration of this medium has lead Heidel to create sculpture of painted light and the nuances of the colorful laminated glass harkens to the painterly and fluid surfaces of his paintings. Heidel's works on paper reflect the translucent quality of his glass sculpture.
