2 p. Russell Childers' 1991 biography., In 1970 Childers had a one man show that opened in the University Of Oregon Museum Of Art and has toured colleges, galleries and libraries in the Northwest including a very successful exhibit in Sapporo, Japan. His wood carvings are being purchased by museums and private collectors who gladly pay up to $2,000.00 for his pieces. Russell has truly gained recognition as a gifted artist. This was not always the case. On January 11, 1926 at the age at 10 has was committed to Fairview State Home for the Feeble Minded because of "fits" that quite possibly could have been epileptic seizures stemming from early childhood falls and several bouts with extremely high fevers. Records show that his first- and second- grade teachers regarded him as incorrigible. In those days that was enough reason to have a child institutionalized. While at Fairview he received several diagnoses including autism. Perhaps because of deafness he found it difficult to communicate so he was labeled as being retarded. As a former superintendent of Fairview, Merry McGee said, "When a person was labeled as retarded, all services ceased." Patients were fed and clothed but received no training. Russell spent the next forty years in silence. Russell is not sure when he started to carve but thinks it was during World War II. While thumbing through an issue of Life Magazine, he saw an illustration of a woodcarver at work and this triggered something in him. Woodcarving was Childers' only significant activity for most of the forty years he spent there. He was not allowed to have a knife for many years, so he sharpened bits of metal and with donated wood he eagerly created wooden cowboys, bartenders and bears for the ward attendants. He charged 50 cents for his work. In 1965, Pauline Lindell, one of the founders of Willamette Valley Rehabilitation Center felt that Russell was capable of "leading a more useful life" and helped in obtaining his release. Russell moved to Lebanon to reside in a foster home. At Willamette Valley Rehabilitation Center he was given a set of hearing aids, extensive reading and writing classes and a place to continue his carving. In his new open environment, Russell has thrived. He is paid a salary at the center, with which he shares the proceeds from his carvings. As he works at his bench, Russell will occasionally chat with workers who pass by, but his thoughts stay with the steady strokes of his coping saw as he shapes a piece of maple or oak into a delicate figure. His self-portraits and the poignant pre-Fairview family scenes are works of art. One of the most acclaimed is of Childers, a brother and an aunt who are sitting together on a bench the day before he was committed. As Jan Zach, retired professor of sculpture at the University of Oregon and a good friend of Russell, said a few years ago, "Russell's work is beautiful, it's absolutely astonishing." When asked, Russell thinks he does good work, but calls it a hobby -- one that he has pursued eight hours a day for a good part of his 73 years., The Oregon Arts Commission has ten Regional Arts Councils that provide delivery of art services and information. 5 p. Thomas Prochaska's exhibition list., Artist Thomas Prochaska grew up drawing and sketching in Illinois, and then earned a degree in Art Education from the University of Wisconsin. A full scholarship to the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn found him studying printmaking and painting. After a couple of years of teaching at Pratt Graphics Center and at the University of Georgia, he followed his love for printmaking — and his Swiss girlfriend — to Europe. “That’s where I learned the most about printmaking, doing it every day and doing it in a real practical manner… in Switzerland, in a tiny town, St.Prix.” When visa problems sent him back to the U.S., he taught at Wesleyan College in Macon, Georgia, visiting family in Oregon during the summers. “And so I fell in love with Portland,” he sighs with a smile. “I went from being a Department Chairman to being in the Saturday Market.” His woodcuts of trout and salmon — “I also came here for the fishing,” he adds — were eventually licensed for use on T-shirts. Popular ones. “That made me feel real happy because it was people’s art, art away from institutions,” Tom says. “In some ways, that was the most satisfying work I’ve ever done, because people wore them.” (excerpt from biography at http://www.pnca.edu/exposure/stories/28/tom-prochaska), The Oregon Arts Commission has ten Regional Arts Councils that provide delivery of art services and information. 2 p. Arvie Smith's 1995 artist statement., "Most of my art, in some way or another, tries to answer the question, 'Who am I?'" says Smith, looking at a particularly aggressive piece that he painted in 2006 called "The Lower 9th." The large oil-on-canvas features a pastiche of what he calls "derogatory caricatures" (including Aunt Jemima and "black-face" characters) surrounded by images of forgotten souls swept away in Hurricane Katrina. "I'd hate to think that my history began with slavery," says Smith. "To me, that is a lie. But the remnants still exist today, especially in the way we have been depicted in culture. This is what I try to explore in my work." Romantic yet humorous, these paintings emphasize a vigorous nature that is immortalized in pain, creating a symbolic tone. Allan Stephenson's 1995 exhibition list., Allan Stephenson is an artist who draws his inspiration from the natural landscape particularly that of his native British Isles and also that of the Pacific Northwest where he now makes his home. *I am always looking for and attempting to communicate with the viewer that special sense of place that infuses some areas of the natural world with meaning, wonder and beauty. I hope my work can provide some escape from the sometimes frenetic world we all live in. I am a traditionalist. I don't see the art I produce as breaking any kind of new ground but rather I apply myself to existing forms and attempt to inject perhaps fresh content. I am currently enjoying the medium of pastel for it's direct hands-on quality that allows me to blend and sculpt the pigment using my fingers and hands rather than the intermediary of a brush.* (excerpt from artist's exhibition list), The Oregon Arts Commission has ten Regional Arts Councils that provide delivery of art services and information. Anderson first attended the highly esteemed Pilchuck Glass School in 1986, as a teaching assistant to Henry Halem. He returned in 1987, on a scholarship with Susan Stinsmuhlen-Amend, and again in 1988 and 1989 as a teaching assistant in the advanced graduate program, specializing on glass casting and enamel kiln firing.
