Prior to his successful entertainment career, he was a journalism student and Sigma Chi member at the University of Oregon. He graduated with his BS in Journalism in 1964.

In this portrait, there is Bosco B.A. Baracus action figure sitting on Cannell's shoulder. Bosco B.A. Baracus was a character on Cannell's television show The A-Team. B.A. was played by Mr. T (a.k.a Lawrence Tureaud), a famous actor and professional wrestler. The B.A. action figure was manufactured by the Galoob Company.
