Decorative step lights were envisioned for the circular staircase which serves as a focal point for the south end of the library. In 1990, three glass artists -- John Rose, Linda Ethier, and Liz Capelli -- were invited to make a proposal for the design and fabrication of cast glass sculptures to decorate (and illuminate) these stairs. In 1991, Ethier, of Portland, Oregon, was selected for the project, and in response to the selection committee’s suggestions, she used collections unique to Knight Library as the inspiration for her final designs. Ethier’s completed work, entitled Luminated Manuscripts, consists of 15 glass panels installed on the guardrails of the three flights of stairs that comprise what is now called the Solari Staircase. This staircase is named for Mary Corrigan Solari, a 1946 UO graduate, and her husband, Richard Solari, who contributed to the Knight Library expansion project. Initially installed in November, 1992, the glass sculptures were adjusted with filters in August 1993 to enhance their appearance. The panels depict a variety of figures and objects associated with library collections, and several images are based on recommendations from library staff. Thus these illuminated panels represent a unique collaboration resulting in art about the library: its environment, collections, and the people it serves. Description
The Casey Eye Institute building is situated on a steep, inclined site above the City of Portland. The main entrance of the building is inset below and behind a white, metal panel facade that appears to float in front of the primary building facade. The Glass Floor serves as the boundary separation between the main building and the extended portion of the two storey high entry atrium above the main entrance. The Glass Floor, in conjunction with vertical glass side windows and an overhead clear skylight, define a wrapping boundary of light and transparency. The floor panels consist of two fully tempered sheets of 1/2" glass, a chemically strengthened sheet of solar collecting glass and multiple colored interlayers which comprise a 1-3/8" thick panel of essentially bullet resistant glass to withstand the structural requirements of the site. In particular, the Glass Floor distinguishes itself by respecting the simplicity of the architecture and establishing a bold color to the otherwise monochromatic setting. The use of one color, a rich luminescent aquamarine blue, reflects and transmits its hue both into the atrium and down onto the. main entry. The floor changes at different times of the day and night depending upon the angle of the sum and upon the use of artificial lighting. This aspect of changing qualities of color and luminosity is further enhanced by seeing from below the movement of people across the translucent floor. As viewed and experienced from the interior, the floor provides a sense of depth with muted shadows and highlights of the ground below. A brightness and translucency of surface is enhanced by the use of a textured, light collecting glass. The Glass Floor is a plane that subtly mediates between the exterior and interior of the building. It is a surface which has a life on its own through ever changing levels of transparency, translucency and luminosity. The. Glass Floor is a work which brings life, animation and color to the Casey Eye Institute.
