Fourteen Native American men on horeback are riding through an encampment. All are wearing some sort of headdress and tribal costume. Some are carrying staffs with feather adornment. The horses have beaded harnesses. They are riding through a meadow edged by a line of trees where people stand watching. There are five tipis spaced along the tree line on the meadow. On the opposite side of the photo is a photographer dressed in European-American clothing and a camera. Some of the people watching are wearing cowboy hats and are wrapped in blankets.

His hair is long. The woman is wearing a cloth dress and has a shawl with fringe draped over her shoulders. There are three tipis visible in the image. The two larger ones, to the left and right, are covered with canvas with tule mats around the top area. The third tipi is covered in canvas and is smaller and set back from the other two. The tipi on the left has some poles lashed around the outside. Next to this tipi is a small wooden structure or platform that is covered with some animal hides. There is a similar structure near the smaller tipi. The campsite is in a clearing of bare ground with a few sage bushes and some patches of snow. The younger child is wrapped in a small blanket or shawl, has a beaded necklace, with a beaded flap or sleeve from her dress visible on one arm. There is a clear bucket or large jar placed next to the girls, with an unidentified object in it. The bank where the girls are sitting is a flat clearing, covered with gravel and rocks, that meets the edge of the water. There is an area on the other side of the water that is also covered with rocks, but is steep, not flat. A Native American man, identified as Dr. Whirl-wind (Charley Whirlwind, Sr.) of the Cayuse Tribe, is mounted on a horse. The man is wearing buckskin pants and shirt and moccasins. The shirt is decorated with feathers and beadwork on the front and sleeves. He is wearing a headdress with a full crown of feathers and strips of fur hanging down around his shoulders. He has a large beaded choker. The horse is solid brown in color and has a saddle, saddle blanket and bridle. On the ground in front of the horse is a dog with long, fluffy white hair. The man, horse, and dog are on a slope on the side of a mountain. Around them are some other slopes and some stands of pine trees. The top of the mountain is in the background.
