Description: The McKenzie River is a distinctive stream. It has clear, cold water, a swift current from the headwaters to its mouth, and a steep, narrow valley. The cold, swift water produces fighting trout and the river is one of the best known fishing streams of the country. A fine highway parallels the river for over forty miles and the narrow valley brings road and river together frequently and affords some wonderful river scenes. Being fed in part from snow water the river has a steady flow, both summer and winter. This steadiness in flow and the swift current gives the river great potential power resources and Eugene has already taken advantage of them and depends on the McKenzie for both hydro-electric power and water supply. The river probably gets its name from Donald McKenzie, a member of Astor's fur company who traveled up the valley in 1812 on an exploring trip.

Description: The Michigan timber went first; then Pennsylvania cut hers, and next the lumber indsutry shifted to the South. Long before 1920 timber was recognized as a valuable asset. The South became the most valuable producer of timber around 1900, and it was feely predicted that her timber would be gone before this time. However, the rate of growth in the South is very rapid and her lumbermen are adopting modern methods, so that the South is still a large producer producing nearly 45% of all lumber used in this country in 1926. But the three Pacific coast states contain more than 70% of all virgin softwood timber and are rapidly becoming the leading lumber producers of the country. Washington has been the foremost state in lumber production since 1905; and Oregon has more standing timber than any other state, so that she will certainly be the leader in lumber production in a few more years.

Description: This branch is reached by crossing the main river at Belknap Bridge and turning to the West. The road is only a few miles long but the good trail shown in this picture leads up the South Fork some twenty miles to the Ollalie Trail. The South Fork country affords good hunting after bad weather drives the deer out of the higher mountains. When Jim Jeffries was heavyweight champion he had a hunting camp on the South Fork.

Description: This shows the river some three miles above Blue River. The mountain in the distance is Death Ball Mountain which got its curious name in this manner--some government surveyors were working around the mountain; their cook was a heavy handed man who made such hard solid biscuits that the men called them "death balls". The mountain had no name, so it was put on the map as Death Ball Mountain.

Description: Snow in fir timber lays a spell of matchless quiet and peace. Oregon's highway system now gives access to high mountains and winter sports which were formerly inaccessible. The McKenzie Pass is of course closed by snow in the winter, but the highways leading toward the Pass on both sides are fine all year roads. Lost Creek is 66 miles from Eugene.

Description: Geologists believe that the Three Sisters region was originally covered by one great mountain which they call Mount Multnomah. The top and center of this mountain was blown off by a terrific explosion leaving fragments in a great circle. From the north these fragments are the North Sister, the Husband, the Wife, Devil's Hill and Broken Top. The Middle and South Sisters were thrown up by later volcanic action. This would make the North Sister the oldest of the peaks.

Description: The black rock to our left is the North Sister and the Middle Sister is in the background. Collier Glacier is the largest in the state. It is about a mile and a half long, has an average width of 3000 feet and an estimated depth in the central portion of over 500 feet.

Description: Some of the glacial streams have dry channels in the early morning but as the ice begins to melt the stream grows until by evening it is a regular torrent. The glacier can be seen in the background.
