Description
Large cutout rosettes and huge open hands are cut out from the aluminum. The symbols are taken from the ends of Hau Dynasty roof tiles and the design from S.W. Anasazi and Mimbres bowls. Description
"Wind Fence," the sculpture, consists of seven sections of wind-animated panels, approximately 10 feet square. The panels are composed of thousands of small anodized aluminum elements that are hinged to move freely in the wind. The panels are mounted onto a series of 8-inch diameter stainless steel poles that are connected by a framework of 2 1/2 inch stainless square tubing. The poles are embedded into concrete footings that are 2 feet in diameter and about 8 feet deep. The overall shape of the fence traces out a gentle arc that sweeps towards the north entrance to the building and extends back into the grove of trees to the east. The intent of the artwork is to reveal the invisible passage of wind through the fence. The curve of the fence echoes the curved facade of the architecture. Description
On the ground floor the bases of the columns are clad with steel plates. Inside there are lights and holes in the steel to suggest fragments of an atomic pattern and represent solid-state physics, the foundation of the physical sciences. The silvery steel light standards on the second floor are shaped to look like two molecules merging and are there to represent the molecular science fields. The staircase leading to the upper floors is faced with the frieze painted with a design like the spiraling "double-helix" of DNA- the molecular chain on which living matter is based. Description
This view documents an inscription on the surface of the "e" from Shakespeare's King Henry V. Note that the software under current use in the compilation process does not allow for the preservation of poetic stanzas. The content reads as follows: "Many things, having full reference to one consent, may work contrariously; as many arrows loosed several ways, fly to one mark, as many ways meet in one town; as many fresh streams meet in one salt sea; as many lines close in the dial's center; so may a thousand actions, once afoot, end in one purpose, and be all well borne without defeat.", L. Kirkland 1988; Oregon St. Univ.; Engineering College; Maxwell's EQ, The symbols scattered around the atrium form a kind of puzzle which reflects the scientist's focus on the ingredients of a solution, rather than the final solution. Hanging aluminum rods represent a sound wave, as on an oscilloscope. A steel X sculpture outdoors represents a vector field. The stone pieces indoors represent the symbols E, D, B, H, Delta, a point and an equal sign. Some of the sandblasted quotes are whimsical, as in Samuel Butler's "A hen is only an egg's way of making another egg." Kirkland's favorite is from a T. S. Eliot poem: "Where is the knowledge we have lost in information? Where is the wisdom we have lost in knowledge?" Kirkland said he is pleased with his effort in stone and the way it relates to the people who will see it. "I think that a public commission needs to be responsive to the people, to a specific audience."
