Building Oregon

Building Oregon: Architecture of Oregon and the Pacific Northwest provides approximately 20,000 images with accompanying documentation about the architectural heritage of the Pacific Northwest with special emphasis on Oregon’s historic sites and built environment.

A significant number of images come from slides donated to the University of Oregon Libraries, including the collections of architectural historian Marion Dean Ross, preservationist Michael Shellenbarger, and architect C. Gilman Davis. As a result of continuing collaboration with the Oregon State Historic Preservation Office, many documents in the collection represent works listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Acknowledgements

Substantial support for this collection comes from the bequest of Jean Gillett, a graduate of the UO's School of Architecture and Allied Arts (now the College of Design). The Architecture Foundation of Oregon and the Marion Dean Ross/Pacific Northwest Chapter of the Society of Architectural Historians have also contributed to the development of this project. Content from the Oregon State Historic Preservation Office has enriched the scope and value of this resource. Christine L. Sundt, the Visual Resources Curator, UO Libraries, 1985-2005, collected, preserved, and made accessible the majority of the slides that constitute the source of this digital collection. Those who have researched and documented these important works over many decades deserve the most appreciation.
