Description: Charles Otis “Chuck” Williams II (1943-2016) was an Oregon-based professional photographer and environmental activist. Williams was a direct descendant of Chief Tumulth of the Cascades Tribe, who signed the (ratified) 1855 Treaty of the Willamette Valley, and for many years was a member of the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde. In addition to his work as a photographer, Williams worked as publications editor and public-information manager for the Columbia River Inter-Tribal Fish Commission in Portland, co-founded and managed Salmon Corps, and was the former national parks expert for Friends of the Earth. He also started the campaign for a Columbia Gorge National Scenic Area, and his land donation is now the Franz Lake National Wildlife Refuge. For much of his life Williams was based in The Dalles area, and by virtue of his work as a professional photographer, he attended events, festivals, and celebrations predominantly in Oregon and Washington. He sought out opportunities to document these events and his career flourished; in time, several organizations invited him to be one of their official photographers. Williams published the book Bridge of the Gods, Mountains of Fire: A Return to the Columbia Gorge in 1980, and In 1994, Williams opened his gallery, The Columbia Gorge Gallery, which was located downtown in The Dalles, Oregon.

Description: Robert Henderson was shown here photographing the OSU Marching Band. Robert W. Henderson received a B.S. in Agronomy in 1938. Henderson served as Assistant Director of the Agricultural Experiment Station and a Farm Crops faculty member from 1946-1976. Henderson was also known for his love of photography.

Description: Gilkey attended OSC from 1948 to 1953, receiving a BS in Science Education (1951) and an MS in Education (1953). As a student, he took photographs for the Beaver Yearbook and Oregon Stater; he was shooting Stater cover photos as a sophomore. While at OSC, Gilkey also worked as a stringer photographer for Portland’s Oregon Journal newspaper. He went on to a long career with the Portland Public Schools, and is the father of an award winning photographer and OSU alumnus, the late David Gilkey.

Description: Johns attended OSU from 1970 to 1974. Though he came to OSU to study agriculture, he discovered a passion for photography. After graduating from Oregon State and earning a master’s degree at the University of Minnesota, Johns embarked on a successful career as a photojournalist. He was named the National Newspaper Photographer of the Year in 1979. After a number of years as a freelance photographer, he joined National Geographic’s staff in 1995. In 2003 he became editor-in-chief of National Geographic magazine. That same year he was also named as one of the twenty-five most important photographers in the world. Johns was OSU’s 2005 commencement speaker.
