Ode to a Grand Staircase (for four hands) is based on composer Erik Satie's The March of the Grand Staircase (1914) and it's silent libretto-- musical notes that Satie forbade to be read aloud. The book is housed in a red, cloth covered box with a magnetic closure. The inside back of the case lists facts about Satie. The french-door structure of the book has a central cutouts, so that each page reveals something of the pages to come. Each of the two spines is made up of a shallow accordion fold, with pages glued to the folds in the manner of a flag book. When the covers are pulle out the pages stand out immitating the form of a staircase. When fully extended and viewed from above, the staircase/ piano key motif is further apparent., Signed by the artists
Listening was designed and printed by Julie Chen in an edition of 75 copies. Papers used include Fabriano Ingres Heavyweight and handmade sheets from the St.-Armand paper mill. Typefaces used include Copperplate Gothic and Adobe Garamond ... Leavings was designed and produced by Julie Chen in an edition of 100 copies. Book of fold-out pages in glass-topped box fashioned like a compass on a braided string. Compass is inset on larger dial face which has small replica human hand holding a string with pointer. The box, which is designed to resemble a candy box, contains 3 miniature books (2 of which are accordion folded), 1 folded octagonal object with text, and a small box with text containing 5 copper balls which are to be placed into 5 holes on box's bottom surface. All are designed to resemble pieces of candy and are nested in a cloth which fits over partitioned bottom of box.
