Umbrellas were a common site at OSU football games for decades. Because they often interfered with other fans’ views, they later were banned from football games.
Jessup earned a BFA in graphic design at OSU in 1976. After receiving an MFA from Stanford in 1978, he worked for Korty Films, Lucasfilm, and Industrial Light and Magic. While at ILM, he received an Academy Award for special effects work on the film Innerspace and a nomination for Hook. In 1996 he joined Pixar, where he worked on many of successful films including Toy Story 2, Monsters, Inc. and Ratatouille. For the latter he received an ANNIE award for Production Design in an Animated Feature.
Terry Baker was recruited to play basketball at Oregon State, but is better known for his football exploits, winning the 1962 Heisman Trophy. On the basketball court, Baker averaged 10.7 and 13.4 points per game during his junior and senior years. He is the only college athlete to have ever won both the Heisman Trophy and played in an NCAA basketball tournament Final Four. Seen in the foreground (#21) is center Mel Counts.

Karski, a leader of the Polish underground during World War II, and DePriest, conductor and director of the Oregon Symphony, received honorary doctorates from OSU during the 1990 commencement exercises.
OSU’s Trysting Tree was a popular gathering spot on campus that dates back almost to the university’s origins as Oregon Agricultural College. The nickname evolved around 1900 when President Thomas Gatch admonished two students who were regularly meeting there for romantic purposes. The original gray poplar had to be removed in 1987 due to advanced disease, but prior to that cuttings from it had been used to establish a replacement tree which is located near present day Furman Hall.
Counts played for OSU’s varsity team from 1962 to 1964. OSU played in the NCAA tournament all three of Counts’ years. The 1962 squad made to the western regional finals before falling to UCLA, and Counts led the 1963 team to a Final Four appearance. He was an All-American in 1963 and 1964, and as a senior, he averaged 26.7 points and 18.9 rebounds per game. Counts played on the gold medal-winning 1964 U.S. Olympic team, and spent twelve years in the NBA. Seen in the background is guard Terry Baker.
