A view of a Native American encampment on the Umatilla Indian Reservation, taken July 4, 1902. About 20 tipis are set up in a line along a low rise of ground. There seems to be water in a little wash behind them, and a river in the background, with low bluffs rising up from it. To the right of the photo are some trees, and in the foreground several discarded cans. A small dog or cat ambles in front of the second tipi from the left; a pair of grazing horses and a person can be seen at the right. There appears to be some sort of vehicle or equipment near the small tipi in the center of the image. The ground is covered with grass and low shrubs, and low clouds are scudding across the sky.

A Native American family of three is posing in front of a tipi for pictures being taken by a white man. The Native American woman is in a separate pose on a blanket with another blanket wrapped around her. A small dog is behind her. The Native American man holding the child seems to be the subject being currently photographed. Behind the tipi there is corral for two horses and shed within the fenced area of the corral. Near the right hand side of the tipi there is a mound covered by a blanket with a pot or basket near by. The Native American male is wearing a cowboy hat and boots with a blanket overcovering. In the far background to the left of the photo are hills and telegraph or telephone poles.

A Native American man, identified as Dr. Whirl-wind (Charley Whirlwind, Sr.) of the Cayuse Tribe, is mounted on a horse. The man is wearing buckskin pants and shirt and moccasins. The shirt is decorated with feathers and beadwork on the front and sleeves. He is wearing a headdress with a full crown of feathers and strips of fur hanging down around his shoulders. He has a large beaded choker. The horse is solid brown in color and has a saddle, saddle blanket and bridle. On the ground in front of the horse is a dog with long, fluffy white hair. The man, horse, and dog are on a slope on the side of a mountain. Around them are some other slopes and some stands of pine trees. The top of the mountain is in the background.

Rev. James N. Cornelison sits in the doorway of a house. He sits at ease petting a large spotted dog. He is dressed in a suit with open jacket, vest, fold-down collar, and plaid bow tie, and appears to be wearing cowboy boots. He has a mustache and short beard. His legs are crossed and partially obscured by a plaid blanket, half of which lies in a heap at his feet. Next to it on the Reverend's right is a small pile of kindling and a chopped log. Behind him in the interior of the dwelling stands a table with turned legs, on which are piled a number of books. A cord or rope lies on the ground next to the dog.

The kneeling woman is wearing a fringed and beaded leather dress with a cape. She is holding a bow in her left hand. She has a basket hat woven in a geometic design on her head. On the wall behind the women are several artifacts and objects, including: two cradleboards with floral designs, a photograph of a bulldog, a basket with geometric designs, a military cap, a military helmet, two swords, a harness, two bugles, some unidentified gear, belts, two pair of moccasins with floral beading, two bags with floral designs, an unidentified artifact with long fringes, one woven bag with geometric designs, three belts or sashes with geometric designs, an animal pelt, a long feathered headdress, a saddle, a long necklace, a buckskin coat with fringes and some other clothes. There is a poster behind the women with a picture of soldiers and Native Americans on horseback; the number "49" can be seen on it. Small knives and feathers are displayed along the top of the poster.

Description
An outside photograph of two Native American men standing in a campsite. Both men are wrapped in what have been identified as Pendleton blankets. There are three tipis in the campsite. The tipi farthest back shows a darkened canvas. The middle tipi has smoke coming out of it; it is composed from layered tuli mats and canvas. There are rough-hewn poles lying on the outside of both tipis, as well as internal frame poles that extrude from the top. The third tipi -- on the photograph's right side -- is made entirely of canvas and shows no external poles. There is an opening in the top for smoke to escape; the top has been noticeably darkened from the smoke. Behind the three tipis lies a dark, unidentified, man-made structure; it is surrounded by brush and appears to have a ladder either leaning against it or sticking through an opening. Both men are wearing hats; one man appears to be walking away from the tipis while the other is leaning against what has been identified as an oar. Behind the man with the oar is a tipi opening; there is a tule mat covering the doorway and miscellaneous articles lying on the ground. There are two dogs in the campsite. In the surrounding area are cottonwood trees and pine trees. The cottonwood trees are leafless and there may be patches of snow on the ground. All around the campsite are shrubs, and a gently rising hillside can be seen in the background.
