This heavily patinaed sculptural form consists of a rectangular base that supports an inverted trapezoidal form ornamented with three unique groupings of symbols where the longer sides of the trapezoid depict different images and the shorter sides depict the same images. In this contextual view from the north side, two of the four sides are visible. The longer side depicts an eye form in the center, surrouned by a fish form, what appears to be a beaver form, and a bird form. The shorter side presents an eye form with two hands below it., The Gaurdian; Mark Sponenburgh; east and north side; Veterinary Hosp. (OSU), "To Sponenburgh, art and nature glorify one another. Their relationship has marked his sculpture over the decades, in his animals and natural phenomena - the mounds of a cumulus cloud, the arc of a wave and the frosty dignity of an owl carved from Douglas fir - that some think will be his enduring legacy." A photo-realistic rendering of a can of Royal brand baking powder sitting next to a stack of wicker baskets on a black background., Royal with Baskets, The paintings of Sally Haley are much loved in the Northwest, partly at least because she often (but not always) has painted familiar domestic objects-bread, eggs, bottles, fruit, dishes, the simple, reassuring, eternal things. And she paints them with mastery so admirable that our response is a combination of delight and awe. They appear in a variety of settings and con-formations: a loaf of bread may almost fill its small canvas; a stemmed glass containing, quite surprisingly, five eggs, and standing alone, with mysterious iconic overtones, in a vast dark space; or a group assembled on a table in Haley's own subtle version of the still life. But there is a great deal more to her art than the masterly rendition of familiar objects. Many of her canvases, entirely bare of objects, are seen from, as one might say, a much wider angle; they are interiors divided into austere geometric shapes which suggest corridors, walls, windows, doors. This artist is certainly drawn by the basic architectural features of interiors, and to their meanings: the universal vertical and horizontal planes of wall and floor, the advance of corridors, the promise of doorways, the rectangles of sky disclosed by windows. She makes her own perspective, often puzzling, sometimes disquieting. In most of her painting there is…a sense of something, withheld or barely suggested, of questions unanswered, though: everything in the painting exists under the most unequivocally revealing light. Yet the surreal hovers near, is waiting in the wings, so to speak, and is sometimes evoked. At any rate, on feels , http://www.laurarusso.com/artists/haley.html, The Oregon Arts Commission has ten Regional Arts Councils that provide delivery of art services and information. Decorative step lights were envisioned for the circular staircase which serves as a focal point for the south end of the library. In 1990, three glass artists -- John Rose, Linda Ethier, and Liz Capelli -- were invited to make a proposal for the design and fabrication of cast glass sculptures to decorate (and illuminate) these stairs. In 1991, Ethier, of Portland, Oregon, was selected for the project, and in response to the selection committee’s suggestions, she used collections unique to Knight Library as the inspiration for her final designs. Ethier’s completed work, entitled Luminated Manuscripts, consists of 15 glass panels installed on the guardrails of the three flights of stairs that comprise what is now called the Solari Staircase. This staircase is named for Mary Corrigan Solari, a 1946 UO graduate, and her husband, Richard Solari, who contributed to the Knight Library expansion project. Initially installed in November, 1992, the glass sculptures were adjusted with filters in August 1993 to enhance their appearance. The panels depict a variety of figures and objects associated with library collections, and several images are based on recommendations from library staff. Thus these illuminated panels represent a unique collaboration resulting in art about the library: its environment, collections, and the people it serves. This landscape scene depicts a meandering body of water amongst tall grasses and trees., Allan Stephenson; Estuary-Gearhart; 10 x 18 inches, Allan Stephenson is an artist who draws his inspiration from the natural landscape particularly that of his native British Isles and also that of the Pacific Northwest where he now makes his home. *I am always looking for and attempting to communicate with the viewer that special sense of place that infuses some areas of the natural world with meaning, wonder and beauty. I hope my work can provide some escape from the sometimes frenetic world we all live in. I am a traditionalist. I don't see the art I produce as breaking any kind of new ground but rather I apply myself to existing forms and attempt to inject perhaps fresh content. I am currently enjoying the medium of pastel for it's direct hands-on quality that allows me to blend and sculpt the pigment using my fingers and hands rather than the intermediary of a brush.* (excerpt from artist's exhibition list), http://www.allanstephenson.com/index.php, The Oregon Arts Commission has ten Regional Arts Councils that provide delivery of art services and information. Murase Studio was selected by the Oregon Fire Service and the Oregon Arts Commission to design and develop a statewide memorial that honors firefighters who have made the ultimate sacrifice and given their lives in the line of duty. Located in the new Oregon Public Safety Academy, the memorial is designed to evoke solace and inspiration to those who continue to serve and also to the public it protects. The design incorporates a granite wall with a bronze Maltese cross that lists the names of those fallen and a black granite stripe in the plaza with the inscription, "In the Line of Duty." This print divides the main picture plane from the surrounding decorative border of images geometrically. The main picture plane, a vertical rectangle, occupies the center of the piece, and it depicts a landscape scene over a body of water. Cliffs line either side of the water, while trees form a horizon line. A fisherman stands on one of the cliffs on the right side, and two fish and a dragon fly occupy the space above the water. Two horizontal rectangles flank the upper and lower sections of the piece, and the main picture plane is flanked by a series of squares and rectangles. The shapes that create the border around the main picture plane contain a conglomeration of natural and geometric forms., The Same But Different; linocut print; (46 x 22 inches(image)); edition of 20; 1996, The Oregon Arts Commission has ten Regional Arts Councils that provide delivery of art services and information.
