Richard Swanson maintains two studios--a pottery, for making utilitarian and sculptural vessels, and a warehouse space, where he works on multi-media sculpture for museum installations, landscape installations and dance collaborations. He resides in Helena, Montana--a mountain town of much sunshine and an atmosphere of support and encouragement for the arts. His wife Penny Price Swanson, is an artist and art educator. Their son Alex is an artist for a small, innovative video game company in Eugene, Oregon. Richard’s first professional training was in psychobiology, a field dedicated to exploring the physical basis of memory. A casual pottery lesson from a friend led to an intense period of self-teaching and a career as a studio potter--later expanded to include ceramic sculpture. In 1974 he came to Helena, Montana as a resident at the Archie Bray Foundation, an internationally recognized ceramic center. An interest in working large scale with materials other than clay led him back to graduate school at the University of Montana--this time in art--where he undertook the first of several sculpture/dance collaborations with Amy Ragsdale, choreographer and art director of the Montana Transport Company. Since obtaining his MFA from the University of Montana in 1994, his work has been honored with several major grants and awards, including a Montana Art Council Individual Fellowship in Visual Art, Art Matters Foundation Individual Artist Fellowship, Helena Presents Individual Artist Grant and a New Forms: Regional Initiative Grant. His large scale works have found permanent homes in many locations in Montana--including the Engineering and Physical Sciences Building at Montana State University, Rocky Mountain College, Paris Gibson Museum of Art and the Holter Museum of Art--and in other states, including the Eiteljorg Museum in Indianapolis, Indiana and the Buffalo Bill Historical Center in Cody, Wyoming. This sculpture is comprised of a panel of glass that presents a hologram of a woman in a white robe who is looking down at the head of a classical sculpture that she cradles in her arms. Decorative step lights were envisioned for the circular staircase which serves as a focal point for the south end of the library. In 1990, three glass artists -- John Rose, Linda Ethier, and Liz Capelli -- were invited to make a proposal for the design and fabrication of cast glass sculptures to decorate (and illuminate) these stairs. In 1991, Ethier, of Portland, Oregon, was selected for the project, and in response to the selection committee’s suggestions, she used collections unique to Knight Library as the inspiration for her final designs. Ethier’s completed work, entitled Luminated Manuscripts, consists of 15 glass panels installed on the guardrails of the three flights of stairs that comprise what is now called the Solari Staircase. This staircase is named for Mary Corrigan Solari, a 1946 UO graduate, and her husband, Richard Solari, who contributed to the Knight Library expansion project. Initially installed in November, 1992, the glass sculptures were adjusted with filters in August 1993 to enhance their appearance. The panels depict a variety of figures and objects associated with library collections, and several images are based on recommendations from library staff. Thus these illuminated panels represent a unique collaboration resulting in art about the library: its environment, collections, and the people it serves. An abstraction of line and form presented in relief sculptural form. This piece is comprised of six cutouts of light purple material whose shape references thick, sinuous line. These six shapes suggest a human form. Between what might be interpreted as arms and legs are another eight cutouts in dark purple material; three on the left side and five on the right. The pieces hang out slightly from the wall so their forms cast interesting shadows on the wall behind the sculpture., Barry Pelzner; della robbia blue; 1979; 78x78 inches, http://pnca.edu/programs/bfa/faculty.php, http://www.froelickgallery.com/Artist-Detail.cfm?ArtistsID=248, The Oregon Arts Commission has ten Regional Arts Councils that provide delivery of art services and information. (information provided by Ed Teague, Head of the University of Oregon's Architecture & Allied Arts Library. For more detail on Ethier's Luminated Manuscripts, please view http://darkwing.uoregon.edu/~ehteague/staircase/ ) For an overview on the process behind the creation of this work, please view this page created by Ed Teague: http://darkwing.uoregon.edu/~ehteague/staircase/ethier.html, Linda Ethier; glass; 1995; U of O Knight Library, info@lindaethier.com, http://www.lindaethier.com/, The Oregon Arts Commission has ten Regional Arts Councils that provide delivery of art services and information. Decorative step lights were envisioned for the circular staircase which serves as a focal point for the south end of the library. In 1991, Ethier, of Portland, Oregon, was selected for the project, and in response to the selection committee’s suggestions, she used collections unique to Knight Library as the inspiration for her final designs.
