Luminous Glass Floor

Description: The Casey Eye Institute building is situated on a steep, inclined site above the City of Portland. The main entrance of the building is inset below and behind a white, metal panel facade that appears to float in front of the primary building facade. The Glass Floor serves as the boundary separation between the main building and the extended portion of the two storey high entry atrium above the main entrance. The Glass Floor, in conjunction with vertical glass side windows and an overhead clear skylight, define a wrapping boundary of light and transparency. The floor panels consist of two fully tempered sheets of 1/2" glass, a chemically strengthened sheet of solar collecting glass and multiple colored interlayers which comprise a 1-3/8" thick panel of essentially bullet resistant glass to withstand the structural requirements of the site. In particular, the Glass Floor distinguishes itself by respecting the simplicity of the architecture and establishing a bold color to the otherwise monochromatic setting. The use of one color, a rich luminescent aquamarine blue, reflects and transmits its hue both into the atrium and down onto the. main entry. The floor changes at different times of the day and night depending upon the angle of the sum and upon the use of artificial lighting. This aspect of changing qualities of color and luminosity is further enhanced by seeing from below the movement of people across the translucent floor. As viewed and experienced from the interior, the floor provides a sense of depth with muted shadows and highlights of the ground below. A brightness and translucency of surface is enhanced by the use of a textured, light collecting glass. The Glass Floor is a plane that subtly mediates between the exterior and interior of the building. It is a surface which has a life on its own through ever changing levels of transparency, translucency and luminosity. The. Glass Floor is a work which brings life, animation and color to the Casey Eye Institute. She acquired her basic skills in photography while apprenticed to a commercial photographer in Chicago. Her photographs are a kind of visual haiku. Her subject is usually nature, celebrating natural light and shadow on rocks, reeds, sand, driftwood, ice, leaves, things we usually pass without seeing. Description: Beyond what has been provided herein, we have no additional information regarding this artwork., Ruza Erceg In 1961, Ruza Erceg said to her daughter, Helen, "If I have paint brush, I start to make painting." Helen relayed this message to her brother Joseph, a graphic designer, who, that same day, bought her watercolors, brushes and paper. She immediately began to produce delightful, colorful images. Ruza was born in the fanning village of Imotski, Yugoslavia in 1898 and came to this country in 1922. She and her husband first settled in Pennsylvania then moved to Oregon. Ruza Erceg paints images of her past in Yugoslavia. They are soft and colorful images of rural scenes (farms, fields and farm houses), villages, white buildings with red tile roofs and an occasional painting of a sailboat or of a larger city. Her images are of no particular site but rather of a collective spirit of the land she left so long ago. Luminous Glass Floor

Description: The Casey Eye Institute building is situated on a steep, inclined site above the City of Portland. The main entrance of the building is inset below and behind a white, metal panel facade that appears to float in front of the primary building facade. The Glass Floor serves as the boundary separation between the main building and the extended portion of the two storey high entry atrium above the main entrance. The Glass Floor, in conjunction with vertical glass side windows and an overhead clear skylight, define a wrapping boundary of light and transparency. The floor panels consist of two fully tempered sheets of 1/2" glass, a chemically strengthened sheet of solar collecting glass and multiple colored interlayers which comprise a 1-3/8" thick panel of essentially bullet resistant glass to withstand the structural requirements of the site. In particular, the Glass Floor distinguishes itself by respecting the simplicity of the architecture and establishing a bold color to the otherwise monochromatic setting. The use of one color, a rich luminescent aquamarine blue, reflects and transmits its hue both into the atrium and down onto the. main entry. The floor changes at different times of the day and night depending upon the angle of the sum and upon the use of artificial lighting. This aspect of changing qualities of color and luminosity is further enhanced by seeing from below the movement of people across the translucent floor. As viewed and experienced from the interior, the floor provides a sense of depth with muted shadows and highlights of the ground below. A brightness and translucency of surface is enhanced by the use of a textured, light collecting glass. The Glass Floor is a plane that subtly mediates between the exterior and interior of the building. It is a surface which has a life on its own through ever changing levels of transparency, translucency and luminosity. The. Glass Floor is a work which brings life, animation and color to the Casey Eye Institute.
